The success of large-scale infrastructure does not just depend on steel and wires; it depends on the people who live alongside them. Recognizing that community members are the primary experts on their own customs, challenges, and needs, FGNPC has placed community engagement at the heart of its Phase 1 project preparations.
As FGNPC kickstarts its first batch of projects under Phase 1,which involve the turnkey delivery and installation of upgraded transmission substations at five key sites: Onitsha,Anambra State, Offa,Kwara State, New Abeokuta,Ogun State, Ayede,Oyo State, and Sokoto, Sokoto State, community engagements have commenced across the various project sites.
For FGNPC, stakeholder engagement is more than a formality it is a strategic priority. Effective engagement involves a two-way dialogue that seeks input, addresses local concerns, and builds mutually beneficial relationships. History shows that early sensitization can make or break the implementation of community projects. By consulting beneficiaries from inception to completion, FGNPC ensures the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s burgeoning industrial and commercial hubs.
The sessions were designed to be inclusive, featuring general townhall meetings complemented by tailored consultations with specific groups, including women and youth groups, physically challenged individuals and traditional community leaders
Technical specifications were only part of the conversation. Community members raised important questions regarding local employment opportunities and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
By addressing these concerns directly and establishing structured communication channels with local leaders, FGNPC has solidified a foundation of trust. These meetings have proven instrumental in securing community buy-in, ensuring that as the cables are laid and transformers installed, project beneficiaries are partners in the journey toward a more powered Nigeria.
